We know that the kitchen/home renovation process can be taxing on your whole family while you are temporarily displaced from your most used spaces. Creating a temporary kitchen during a kitchen or home remodel is essential to help maintain your daily routines.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you set up a functional temporary kitchen:

Choose a Temporary Location
Find a space in your home that is convenient, safe, and has access to utilities like electricity and water. We highly suggest spaces like your dining room, living room, or another spare room.
Gather All Essential Appliances
Set up a microwave, toaster oven, or portable electric stove for cooking, and consider using a slow cooker to help with preparing meals.
Relocate Refrigeration
If possible, relocate your current refrigeration to the new space temporarily or make use of the secondary refrigeration that you may have in your basement or garage. If neither of those are options, consider using a mini fridge or cooler with ice packs for temporary refrigeration.
Separate essential cookware and utensils
Set aside kitchen essentials like a pot, pan, serving utensils, and one glass, bowl, plate, and set of utensils for each member of the family.
Stock Up on Disposable Supplies
Although most items can be washed in sinks like the bathroom, we suggest stocking up on disposable supplies such as plates, bowls, and utensils to cut back on your hand-washing loads.
Plan Simple Meals
Opt for easy-to-prepare meals that require minimal cooking during this time and consider prepping family-style meals in advance and reheating them as needed. Additionally, don’t overlook using your outdoor grill for cooking… even in the winter… (brrr we know)! Check out some of our favorite make-ahead recipes here and one of our favorites, a Guinness Beef Stew recipe, that can be reheated in your slow cooker.
Be Patient and Flexible
Home remodels can take time, so be patient and flexible with your temporary kitchen setup. Adjust your routines and expectations as you go, and treat yourself to a meal out when you find yourself needing a break.

A temporary kitchen setup may not be as convenient as your regular kitchen, but with careful planning and organization, you can still prepare meals and maintain a sense of normalcy during your home remodel. When you find yourself in the midst or at the start of a kitchen remodel, remember to keep your spirits high and your eyes on the prize. The journey may be challenging, but the destination is oh-so-worth it!
